Johanna D. Norris, 91, of Rockford, IL died at 1:44 p.m., Tuesday, December 17, 2019 in Wesley Willows Nursing Home in Rockford.\r\n\r\nJohanna Dorothea (Hohenstein) Norris was born in Oroville, CA, on Oct. 12, 1928 to Richard and Johanna Hohenstein. She grew up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the towns of Rogersville and Feather Falls, and Johanna attended high school in Oroville. After studying two years at University of California (UC) Berkeley, and a further 3 years at UC San Francisco, she received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation, she worked for the San Francisco Health Department. In 1953 she met Dale Norris in Paris while on vacation in Europe. They were married in San Francisco June 9, 1956 and then settled in Illinois. They lived in Rockford and Freeport before moving into their own home in Pecatonica in October of 1959. After both children, Rick and Kathleen, were in school, Johanna worked as the school nurse for the Pecatonica School District. She later worked as a school nurse in Freeport and Rockford, as well. During the 1980’s she and Dale became foster parents for Mary and Lisa. Throughout her life, Johanna loved to travel. She took trips to Europe, South Africa, Mexico, the Galapagos Islands, Canada, and throughout the U.S, usually with Dale, but sometimes on her own. \r\n\r\nShe is survived by a son, Rick; daughter, Kathleen (Mullins); foster daughters, Mary and Lisa and three granddaughters, Bonnie Mullins and Hannah and Minna Norris. She was predeceased by her parents and husband of 62 years, Dale A. Norris, \r\n\r\nVisitation to be held at McCorkle Funeral Home-Pecatonica Chapel, 203 W 5th St, Pecatonica on Saturday, December 28, 2019 from 9:30-11 a.m., immediately followed by a Celebration of Life. Cremation rites have been accorded.\r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers, please dedicate any memorials to Sempervirens Fund (they save old growth Redwood trees) or to Court Street United Methodist Church.
