Doris May Berg, 95, of Durand, Illinois died peacefully at 5:55 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2013, at Rockford Memorial Hospital.\r\r\n\r\r\nShe was born November 4, 1917, in Owen Township, the daughter of Robert and Lyle (Nicholls) Geddes. \r\r\n\r\r\nDoris married John A. Berg on July 9, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa. She was an active member of Durand United Methodist Church and an active member and past president for many years of the Durand Inter Se Club. Doris was a graduate of St. Anthony School of Nursing in 1939, and she was instrumental in obtaining better working hours for student nurses in the Rockford area. Doris was employed by the Durand Community School District to set up the first health system, and to be the first school nurse, working half days at first then full time as the District grew, retiring in 1973. \r\r\n\r\r\n Doris studied dress designing under Velia Marinelli of Rockford, was an avid photographer, and as a designer loved working in various fields of art – including pottery, wood carving, woodworking, interior decorating, gardening, painting, sewing, quilting, writing of poetry and family anecdotes, which she shared with family and friends. At one time she had a leather carving business. She raised roses for Jackson Perkins test panel and for a number of years was on the Good Housekeeping test panel for new products. Her main interest was in farming at their farm near Durand. \r\r\n\r\r\nDoris always enjoyed time with her family. Survivors include daughters, April (Jan) Van Rens, Kendall, WI, \r\r\n\r\r\nTrina (Arnold) Ames, Rockford, IL; sons, Douglas (Jari) Berg, Rock City, IL, Gary (Elaine) Berg, Durand, IL, \r\r\n\r\r\nRobert Berg, Tomah, WI; 13 grandchildren; \r\r\n\r\r\n26 great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; sisters, Audra Geddes Welden, Kay (Tom) Glenny, Beth (Ken) Whitford; brother, Roger (Alice) Geddes; brother-in-law, Jim Cummings; several nieces and nephews; children of the heart, Diane (Virgil) Davit and \r\r\n\r\r\nStuart Glenny, who was \r\r\n\r\r\nmore than a nephew.\r\r\n\r\r\nShe was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; grandchild, Jeffery Berg; sisters, Maxine Geddes Cummings, Carol Geddes Murray; brother, Robert Wayne Geddes.\r\r\n\r\r\nFuneral ceremonies will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013, at the Durand United Methodist Church, with Pastor Brian Channel officiating. Burial will be held at Howard Cemetery, Durand, IL. A visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral.
