Alice L. Balsley, 98, of Rockton, Illinois passed away peacefully on February 20, 2012 surrounded by her family. \r\r\n\r\r\nBorn January 3, 1914 in Rockford, Illinois, the daughter of Elmer J. and Corinne (Legg) McLee. She graduated from Rockford High School in 1931 and later received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Rockford College and a Master’s Degree in Administration from Northern Illinois University. \r\r\n\r\r\nHer marriage to Wm. Guy Balsley took place at the Old Stone Church in Rockton on June 1, 1941. Her husband pre-deceased her on May 25, 1998. \r\r\n\r\r\nShe was a teacher for 35 years, beginning as a country schoolteacher for six years before her marriage, where she taught eight grades in one room, stoked the winter fires and maintained the buildings. Following her marriage she taught second grade at Rockton Grade School for two years before leaving to raise her family. While her children were young, she taught a private kindergarten in her home for four years. When Rockton Grade School offered a kindergarten program in 1956, she went back to teach kindergarten until her retirement in 1979. She enjoyed keeping up with the lives of her former students. \r\r\n\r\r\nFor nearly 25 years she assisted her husband in publishing The Rockton Herald newspaper. After her retirement, she traveled extensively, visiting all fifty states as well as several foreign countries. In 1993 she wrote a book for her grandchildren and great grandchildren describing her early years. For 61 years she hosted Christmas celebrations, bridge games and book clubs in the home they built from a Sears catalog in 1951. \r\r\n\r\r\nMrs. Balsley was a member of the Old Stone Church, serving as its historian. She was also a member of New Century Club, Rockton Woman’s Club and several bridge groups. She was a former member of the Macktown Women’s Golf League and the Sunset League. In her youth she was active in Girl Scouting, having achieved the Golden Eaglet award, which was the highest rank in Scouting at the time. She continued to support Girl Scouts the remainder of her life. \r\r\n\r\r\nAlice L. Balsley is survived by her three sons, Stephen (Delores), John (Denise) and James (Judy); daughter –in-law Donna Balsley; 11 grandchildren, Cathy Christensen, Karen Griner, Billie Dailing, Christine Balsley, Anne Boone, Michael Balsley, Thomas Balsley, Jason Balsley, Andrew Balsley, Daniel Balsley and Samual Balsley; 15 great grandchildren who referred to her lovingly as “Omi”; nephews David McLee and Gordon McLee and niece Barb Battaglini. She is predeceased by her husband Wm. Guy Balsley, son William Balsley and daughter Ann Balsley. \r\r\n\r\r\nFuneral Ceremonies will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 24, 2012 at Old Stone Church, 101 East Union, Rockton, Illinois with Pastor Dan Herman officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockton Township Cemetery, 600 West Street, Rockton, Illinois. A luncheon will be served at the American Legion in Rockton after the service. Visitation will be held at McCorkle Funeral Home, 767 N Blackhawk Blvd., Rockton, Illinois from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 23. \r\r\n\r\r\nA memorial will be established.
