Spence W. Smith Obituary (1923 - 2016)

Spence W. Smith, 93, Lake Summerset, IL died at 3:05 p.m., Tuesday, October 25, 2016 in River Bluff Nursing Home after a 21 year battle with dementia. Born October 21, 1923 in Etowah, TN, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo D. and Elsie M. (Kirkland) Smith. Married the former Alice Virginia Needham in May of 1950. He owned and operated Smitty’s Amoco in Rockford for 32 years. Veteran of WW II serving in the US Air Force. He was a member of the Durand United Methodist Church. Survivors include sons Dave (Nancy) Smith, Machesney Park, IL, Larry Smith, Rockford, IL and Robert (Kris) Smith, Davis, IL; nine grandchildren Noelle (Brian), Sarah (Mark), Brianne (Aaron), Jennifer (Brian), Matt (Liana), Keith (Teresa), Jason (Steph), Rachel (Derek) and Ryan (Nicole); 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, two brothers and a sister. Funeral ceremonies will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 29, 2016 in McCorkle Funeral Home-Rockton Chapel, 767 N Blackhawk Blvd, Rockton, IL with Pastor Paul Meyers of Roscoe United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. until time of ceremonies Saturday. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Machesney Park, IL. A memorial has been established to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1111 S. Alpine Road, Suite 307, Rockford, IL 61108
