Dean L. Armstrong Obituary (1927 - 2013)

Dean L. Armstrong, 86, of Lake Summerset died at 4:23 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Born March 1, 1927 in Mattoon, IL to Mr. and Mrs. Walter and Mary (Linthicum) Armstrong. Lived 19 years in Lake Summerset coming here from Elk Grove Village, IL after residing there for 25 years. Married Mildred L. Jensen in Elgin, IL on August 5, 1950. Employed as a teacher by Coleman Grade School in Elgin, IL where he taught third grade, and by Sandburg Jr. High in Elmhurst, IL where he taught science and math until his retirement in 1992. He also was a salesman for Harper Row Publishing. A veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy as an electrician’s mate working on Navy maintenance vessels the U.S.S. Tutuila and the U.S.S. Delta based out of Shanghai, China. A member of the School Board District 300, Lake Summerset yacht club, and of the Carpentersville VFW. He enjoyed sailing, camping, golf, model ship building, motorcycle riding, music, and playing the violin, oboe, and guitar. Dean was a great father; one to teach strong values, love and respect, a loving grandfather and would support his grandchildren any way he could. He also had a wonderful sense of humor. A graduate of Northern Illinois University Teachers College and also received his Masters in Education from Northern Illinois University. He is survived by his daughter, Beth Sherry of Washington, IL; son, Craig (Andrea) Armstrong of Gilberts, IL; daughters, Tami Armstrong of Lake Summerset, IL, Janet (Doug) Gurss of Lewisburg, Kansas, and Elaine (Allan) Campbell of Mackinaw, IL; grandchildren, Kristen (Wes) Long, Jacob and Jared Armstrong, Amy (Adam) Bory, Brett (Hattie) Perkins, Rebecca (Craig) Nicholson, Jillian (Chris) Fogel, Holly (Bill) Whitson; great grandchildren, Bradley, Addison, Quynn, Lincoln, Greacen, Aiden, Reece, Heath, Ryan, Molly; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Mildred, and brother, Jack. Funeral ceremonies will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013 in Wait Ross Allanson Funeral and Cremation Services, 51 Center Street, Elgin. Burial in Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin. A visitation will be held Friday from 12:00 to service time in the funeral home. Arrangements by McCorkle Funeral Home – Durand Chapel, 101 Main Street, Durand. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the family.
