Obituary for Harland L. Sockness

Harland L. Sockness, 90, of Rockton, IL passed away, Wednesday, December 6, 2017 with family members at his side after a long illness.

Born on February 23, 1927 in Stanley, WI, the son of Ingwall and Helen (Teal) Sockness. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, the 34th Infantry in the (Japan) Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. After returning from the war he married Bernice “Bonnie” Asplund from Dear Park, Wi on August 4th 1950. Harland was employed by Einar Nelson Builders from Durand, IL for over 15 years, he was self-employed for 20 years, and worked for Robert R. Stenstrom Inc. as a general superintendent until retirement in 1989. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, deer hunting in northern Wisconsin, golfing, watching the Green Bay Packers, cheering for the Chicago Cubs, participating in pool tournaments, and playing cards with friends.

Harland is survived by his three children Janice Lichtenberg, Dave (Pam) Sockness and Shirley (Dave) McDonald; granddaughters Jamie (Mike) Eddy, Rene (Jeremy) Miller, Amy Garza and Laceyann (Matt) Tychewicz ; grandsons Bill (Lisa) Lichtenberg, Scott (Jessica) Sockness and Adam (Olivia) Lichtenberg; 17 great grandchildren Seiarra, Kayla, Jonathan, Cassidy, Daniel, Nolan, Logan, Joseph, Ava, Max, Angelina, Emma, Macie, Isley, Jordyn, Oryn, and Kazimierz; sister Maryann Ellis; sister-in-law Margie Sockness; and close friends Jerry Scott, Marvin Ostenson, LeRoy Gleasman, and Harlan Holte. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bonnie of 63 years, twin brother Harvey Sockness, brothers Gerald and Palmer Sockness, son-in-law Jim Lichtenberg and great grandson Kevin Garza.

The family would like to thank “special” care givers Vicky Cooling, Cindy Wierschke, Linda, Delana, and Ken from Northern Illinois Hospice for their loving and comforting care.
A memorial ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, 5506 Reimer Drive, Roscoe, IL with the Pastor John Spangler officiating. A visitation of remembrance will be held at the church from 11:00 a.m. till time of ceremonies, Saturday. McCorkle Funeral Home – Rockton Chapel, 767 N. Blackhawk Blvd., Rockton, IL assisted the family.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Northern Illinois Hospice or Vets Roll.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Interment to be at a future date at Milton Lawns Memorial Park in Janesville, Wisconsin.
